Save a soldier- buy an electric car

So I'm taking the time to write out this little blog post here because it's about a topic that not only has great interest to me, but should to you as well.

In 2010, GM is going to release their first ever mass-market electric car, the Chevy Volt. And if you love America, you should buy one when it comes time for a new car. And here's why.

America consumes 20.7 million barrels of oil per day. That's more than the next six countries (China, Japan, Germany, Russia, India, and Canada) COMBINED! Of those 20.7 million barrels per day, 68% is used for transportation. So we're by far the biggest consumer of oil, and the largest share of that goes to getting people around. Although we do import a lot of oil from friendly countries, a lot of it comes from countries we would rather not be doing business with.

The Volt is a car that runs exclusively off of electricity. It does have a gasoline engine, but that motor only exists to generate electricity to run the electric motors; it has no direct linkage to the wheels. The car can be plugged in at night, and in full electric mode, the car goes about 40 miles. After that, the gas engine kicks in to give it several hundred miles of range. Also, it's a normal sized passenger sedan and goes just as fast as a normal car, so it's not like you're sacrificing anything to drive it.

So assuming you plug it in at night, you're using no gasoline for 95% of your driving. Sure, that electricity has to come from somewhere, but that somewhere is going to be the US, not Venezuela or the middle east. We can finally tell Hugo Chavez and Prince Al-Suad and whoever else to get lost, and they won't have our money propping up their governments anymore. And wow, all of the sudden we don't need $80 billion dollars every couple of months to keep our military in the middle east.

Needing less oil will save Americans money and save American lives. The end. Support the electric car.
